(Nintendo Entertainment System)

The Nintendo Entertainment System (or NES) was introduced to US audiences in 1985 after its initial launch in Japan as the Family Computer (or Famicom). The system was designed with simplicity and affordability in mind, interestingly repackaged visually for US markets, featuring a cassette-like appearance in order to enhance its marketability. It also featured a lengthy production life cycle, reaching a maturation and production cease in 1995, five years after the release of the Super Nintendo (or SNES). The most popular and prominent titles on the NES include: Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Contra, Tetris, Dragon Quest, and Metroid. The NES featured an 8-bit hardware system, creating a technological limitation for sound and visuals, spawning a series of games that featured developer creativity in response.
