Genesis

The Sega Genesis was introduced to the US in 1989 after its original Japanese release in 1988 as the Mega Drive. The Genesis was fiercely competitive with Nintendo's SNES, providing several ad-hoc improvements to its hardware after its original release. The console is most widely known for its primary franchise: Sonic the Hedgehog, but hosted many successful and quality titles such as: Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, and Altered Beast. The Genesis was followed by the Sega Saturn in 1994, a commercial failure that contributed to the company's later financial struggles.
