Sega's handheld
Game Gear console was released to the US in 1991 after its introduction to Japan in 1990. The Game Gear was produced and sold in order to compete with Nintendo's Game Boy, providing a comparable handheld iteration of the Master System, one of Sega's previous consoles from 1985. The console's technological strengths and catalogue were undercut by its short battery life and lack of portability, making it an under-appreciated handheld console for lack of practicality. This, combined with its shared catalogue with the Sega Genesis, make it a generally weaker console in comparison to its contemporaries.
